Custom Samsung T509 Ring Tones

After finally giving up on my old Sony Erickson T610, I have gone the cheap route and procured a free Samsung T509 from my local T-Mobile dealer. I’m glad I didn’t pay extra for some of the fancier phones. Quite honestly, this phone does everything I need and more. One thing about T-mobile that I really don’t like is the fact that you are prevented from creating your own MP3 ring tones in the hopes that you will throw your arms in the air and begin buying T-mobile ring tones a la carte. At $1.99 a pop this is quite a waste of money. After searching a bit on the web, I found a great work-around for getting your own MP3 ring tones loaded and working on the T509.

At the end of this post I have included some ringtones I made from artists Thom Yorke, Prefuse72, Air and others.

1. Download WavePad

This is a completely free program you can use to edit any sound file.

You’ll want to install the program that converts MP3 files to wav files, it’ll ask you if you want to when you install it.

2. Open an MP3 in WavePad

3. Edit it as you choose. Use the trim function in the edit menu to create a 5 - 20 second clip of the song you are sampling.

4. Save as MPEG 4 Audio (*.m4a) - Be sure you delete the mp3 extension on the filename or it will save it as an mp3.

5. Rename the file to a .3gp file.

To do this you simply change the mp3 extension to a 3gp extension. If you cannot see the file extensions, you need to turn them on under Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Uncheck hide extensions

6. Bluetooth the file to your phone.

Use your phone to connect to your computer and download the file. The easiet way to do this is to right click on the file and press the “send to” menu item. There should be a Bluetooth device line item in here that will allow you to send the file directly to your phone.

That’s that, it’s really easy! If you don’t have Bluetooth built into your motherboard components, you can buy a cheap USB bluetooth dongle from your local electronics store for less than $20.00.

After fooling around with my MP3 collection for awhile, I created some really great ringtones. If you are interested, you can download them below.
