InterfaceFLOR: Modular Rugs

I don’t endorse a lot of products on this blog, but there is definitely something to be said about a company that gets me excited about floor coverings. To put it simply, InterfaceFLOR is a company that sells modular carpet tile. More specifically,

FLOR is modular do-it-yourself (DIY) floorcovering that goes everywhere. Simple, elegant, high performance carpet that is easy to create unique designs, install yourself, and maintain.

What is really cool about this is that you can buy several tiles of varying color and texture and assemble them into any shape and pattern that you can imagine. Essentially you are getting a unique reconfigurable rug for a really decent price. You can create area-rugs, runners, or wall-to-wall coverings. I purchased ten tiles and created a nice entry way rug for my apartment. It wasn’t even that expensive either, it only ended up costing a little over $100. If I get sick of the runner, I am going to change it into a 3 x 3 area rug for my dining room.

On their website, they provide you with a visual design tool that allows you to virtually create your rug before you buy it. The tool allows you to shuffle and re-arrange different shapes and textures until you come up with something you like. After that, it automatically shuttles your design choices into your shopping cart and you can purchase immediately. It’s a pretty slick user experience that makes it really difficult not to purchase an item. Besides allowing you to create your own color and texture combinations, they also have plenty of pre-configured combinations that look really slick. Once the package arrives at your door, you can choose to put it together the way you designed it on the website, or you can re-arrange into any form you wish. Putting the tiles together is quite simple too! All you have to do it line the tiles up and attach them together with the included “FLOR Dots”. These are essentially just stickers with really strong adhesive. I was skeptical that these could keep a rug together, but they work great.

The image on the right is a design that my girlfriend came up with while playing with the Flor design tool. I loved it so much I just had to buy it. Each tile has a slightly different texture too, which gives the rug an even more unique look.

I am planning on doing a wall-to-wall FLOR in one of my bedrooms next year!

Great idea from a really innovative company and a great product to boot. Highly recommended.
