Plogger Update

I have released a minor revision to Plogger in order to address some initial problems with the beta release.

You can grab the binary here.

Here’s what’s new:

I fixed the bug in Firefox that caused the thumbnail tags to appear left justified momentarily instead of centered.
Added top level comment management. No need to traverse the entire hierarchy to delete or view a comment on an individual picture. Comments are viewable gallery-wide from a single management pane.
Vast speed improvements through more efficient server-side caching. Galleries are now over 100% faster.
A few other aesthetic changes, including new default CSS that changes the way thumbnails appear. Now thumbnails have nice dynamic rollover effects and less pronounced borders.

Upgrading from the previous version of Plogger is simple. Download the new binary, unzip, and upload all the new files except for plog-connect.php.

Coming soon for the official 1.0 release this summer:

mod_rewrite support for Cruft-free URL’s!
RSS/Atom feeds for individual albums and collections. A top-level aggregate feed for the entire gallery will also be available.
A more robust recursive download function that doesn’t rely on temp directories. It will produce zip files instead of tar.gz.
Full integration with Wordpress

Any way to have the thumbnail galleries show captions instead of filenames?

Well, there would be some spacing issues as captions can be pretty long and the amount of space below the thumbnail is usually no more than 80px.

Did you notice that the caption appears as a “tool-tip” when you hover your mouse over a picture?

I think the Download button with checkboxes is a great idea, but I think it should be hidden at first. You can use fairly simple javascript to make a link that would ‘unhide’ the button and checkboxes, which would be cool (because I, personally, find the checkboxes to be distracting). If think it’s a good idea, I’ll be happy to get you the code.

I have already made the changes to the code, the recursive download feature is off by default for the next release. Additionally, I completely gutted the code (which wasn’t working on most machines because of safe_mode issues) and replaced it with something much more robust.

Did you know you can make the checkboxes dissapear by unchecking “Allow Recursive Downloads” in the options menu?

Is it difficult extract the IPTC info from an image and display that instead of/aswell as the EXIF info? I ask this because the IPTC info is far more interesting to know about a photo (i.e. location, keywords, country, etc.) than the shutter speed and all the EXIF stuff. I have looked EVERYWHERE for a gallery/blogging system that has this feature and the simplicity of plogger but no-one is doing it - if they are it is far too bulky (Coppermine). “Snipe Gallery” does this but is a bit buggy.

Interesting that you bring this up, I haven’t even heard of IPTC until you just mentioned it. That does sound a bit more interesting than EXIF! I will look for an IPTC extraction library when I get home from vacation, it shouldn’t be difficult at all.

I’m learning PHP, so please understand my ignorance. I’m getting these types of errors… can you point me in the right direction to clear them up:

I think you would use it to extract IPTC data from images. I don’t actually do the backend side of things, just the design, but am always reading about these kind of things.

How about removing the filenames completely in the gallery view, so that there is no text under the images?
I’ve been poking around in gallery.php but haven’t figured out how to do this yet… anyone?
