I like to consider myself an original person. I do original things, listen to original music, pretend to have original thoughts. But how can you consider yourself original when a google search on your own name returns about 4,380,000 hits? In my college alone there are 5 Michael J Johnsons. How original is that? Luckily, I have some original friends who have mutated my name into all kinds of strange forms — Mikey Jay, Mick Yantze, Migganis, Migganimon, MJ — all of which are slightly more original than the full version.
All the designers, artists, and successful people that I look up to have magical sounding names; Dan Cedarholm, Shaun Inman, Jeffrey Zeldman, Dunstan Orchard — they all sound like they were born for success.
So, I’ve come up with a couple of candidates for new names in the interest of my own quest for power. How does Clyde Parker sound? I’ve been tossing that one around a lot. Or… how about Jacob Tillinger? Max Power? Winston Parable?
Ahh screw it. I guess I’ll just have to try THAT MUCH HARDER to make my name stand out from the rest.
